Unsworth lose in Wood Cup final

CRICKET: HEROICS from South African Wayne Madsen could not prevent Unsworth from losing their Wood Cup final with Heywood on Sunday.

He hit 75 runs despite struggling with a hand injury he sustained in Unsworth's Lake Garage Central Lancashire League defeat at fellow high-flyers Clifton the previous day.

But Unsworth were bowled out 41 runs short of the 231-run target that Heywood had set.

Madsen made 101 runs in the league match at Clifton while A Sharif and Paul Entwistle hit half-centuries.

But Clifton topped Unsworth's 279 runs for the loss of four wickets with two overs and four wickets to spare.

Lowly Radcliffe suffered a 22-run loss at second-placed Norden in the same league with professional Usman Tariq responsible for 82 of their 167 runs.

And Radcliffe second string's dream of winning the Burton Cup has been ended at the semi-finals stage.

They lost their semi-final replay with Littleborough by five wickets after being bowled out for just 90 runs.

Rock bottom Stand were dismissed for 148 runs in a seven-wicket loss at mid-table Woodhouses in the Lees Brewery Lancashire County League.

And table-topping Prestwich amassed 230-7 before restricting mid-table Denton to 158-9.

Prestwich's best batsmen were Mike Hudson, 63 runs, and Ian Walker, 72, while their star bowler was Oliver Holt, who took six wickets for 29 runs.

Meanwhile, Prestwich player Peter Walters was part of the Lancashire County League side which recorded a five-wicket win in the JW Lees Inter-League Trophy final.

The Lancashire County League topped the Manchester Association's total of 195-9.
