Mixed fortunes for local clubs

26/ 6/2008

CRICKET: The four local cricket clubs – Stand, Prestwich, Unsworth and Radcliffe – endured a mixed bag of results at the rain-hit weekend.

Stand enjoyed an outstanding 84-run success at home to Cheetham Hill in the Walkden Cup to book a semi-final meeting with Denton on Sunday, July 6.

But their home Lees Brewery Lancashire County League game with Woodhouses eventually fell foul of the weather with Stand on 55 runs for the loss of eight wickets when chasing the visitors’ total of 186-5.

Stand had only batted for 19 overs when heavy rain concluded play – one over short of the cut-off point for a concluded game.

In their quarter-final clash, Stand made 228-9 from their 50 overs with their star turns being Stuart Catterall, 89 runs, first team debutant Andrew Sharp, 50, Niranjan Kumara, 16, and Zahid Javed, 15.

Catterall’s knock included five fours and three sixes.

In reply, Cheetham Hill were skittled for 144 runs with Catterall, Javed, Carl Sutcliffe and Chris Holt all claiming two wickets.

Prestwich’s Lancashire County League game at Denton was halted by the weather with the home side on 77-2.

Prestwich had earlier scored 191 runs thanks largely to Mike Hudson, 69 not out, and Viraj Perera, 59.

Cup holders Prestwich progressed to the semi-finals of the Walkden Cup the following day with a 73-run victory at Woodhouses.

Unsworth won their 20/20 home derby with Radcliffe by five wickets after bowling the away side out for just 82 runs.

They were indebted to fine bowling from Darren Love, who took four wickets for 20 runs, and Simon Hetherington, who claimed 4-13, while John Wiggans hit 36 runs with the bat.

However, Unsworth crashed out of the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League’s Wood Cup with a 44-run defeat at holders Heywood, who posted a target of 224-5 before Paul Entwistle scored 44 runs for Unsworth.

And their rain-hit league game at home to lowly Middleton saw them amass 87-6 after dismissing the visitors for 91 runs due largely to Love, 5-47, and Eddie Shah, 3-29.

Radcliffe’s table-topping battle at Heywood was rained off with the home side on 184-3 after opening the batting.
