Trophy king Ellis

WHITEFIELD bowler Gary Ellis is the undisputed king of the ‘invitation 32’ Stephen Pearson Memorial Trophy at Sowerby TBC.
The 34-year-old has won the event, which always attracts a high class field, for the third successive year and for the fourth time overall.
Ellis said: "It’s a good effort. I don’t really know why the green suits me so much, although it has a big crown and four good edges which suits the type of marks that I like to play. And with doing well in it each year I am getting to know the green better than most people."
Ellis beat Chadderton’s Andy Buckley 21-13 in the final, Sheffield’s Matt Bower 21-4 at the semi-finals stage, Darren Plenderleith 21-9 in the quarter-finals and Lee Lawton 21-6 in the last 16 to pick up the £600 first prize and continue his domination of an event which began life in 2002.
That gave the Tonge player his fifth open win this season, which represents his best ever start to a bowling year.
Ellis said: "I seem to have hit the ground running a lot quicker than usual. But I still don’t feel as though I have been playing at 100 per cent. Still, I’m not complaining."
