Gold medal glory

5/ 6/2008

PRESTWICH 12-year-olds Natalie Payne and Kelly Horsfall are celebrating their greatest achievement to date – winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Open Championships in Edinburgh at the weekend.

Representing the British Ken Yu Kai squad, the Prestwich Ken Yu Kai karate club students enjoyed gold medal glory in the open team kumite (fighting) section.

And Natalie also won a bronze medal in the 10 to 12-year kata (patterned movements) category.

Her dad Sean Payne said: "The competition was very strong. There were about 10 different countries competing in Scotland so for the girls to both win medals was a great achievement.

"I would say that it’s their best achievement to date, considering the standard of the competition."
