Standians' own goal proves costly

28/ 8/2008

STANDIANS were hoping to pick up their first points of the season as they played away at Salford Victoria as the Advertiser went to press last night, Wednesday, August 27.

Standians’ 3-2 home loss to Dukinfield Town on Saturday took their Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League record to two defeats from two games.

Dukinfield are one of the league’s promotion favourites and they showed why on Saturday. The tough and well organised side had the confidence to knock the ball around but Standians stood up to the test well and were unlucky not to take at least a point from the game.

They created plenty of chances and scored goals via Jepson, who fired in a low shot following good work by Hulme, and Hulme, who swept home Healey’s curling cross. But young Standians defender Allen scored an own goal and Dukinfield hit the decisive strike as Standians pushed forward looking for a winner themselves.

Allen is one of a number of youngsters in the Standians side and they will need time to settle at this level of football and gel with the members of last year’s squad.
