Boro beat drop and lift the cup

RADCLIFFE Borough are celebrating after capping off one of the best weeks in the club’s history by lifting the Manchester Premier Cup on Monday night.

Two days after winning their battle against relegation, Borough recorded an against-all-odds 2-1 cup final win against Hyde United.

Radcliffe started the game at Oldham FC’s Boundary Park as massive underdogs. Hyde lie ninth in the Conference North – two leagues above Borough. And in Matthew Tipton, Gareth Seddon and Chris Simm they have three strikers who have hit 53 goals between them this season.

But Borough, who have two ex-Hyde players in Mike Flynn and Andy Waine, got off to a dream start with United’s Andy Teague scoring a fifth minute own goal.

And they sealed an historic victory with a Griff Jones strike on 89 minutes, although Hyde had their nerves jangling when Gareth Seddon netted soon after.

Meanwhile, Radcliffe’s UniBond League Division One North status was secured on Saturday with a 3-2 win at sixth-placed Ossett Albion.

Borough netted via Waine, an own goal and Michael Oates to finish the season third from bottom – five points clear of the drop zone. And the result represented sweet revenge for Radcliffe, who lost to Ossett 1-0 in the President’s Cup semi-finals in March and 3-2 in the league back in September.
