Vital victory in relegation battle

24/ 4/2008

RADCLIFFE Borough took a giant leap towards securing their UniBond League Division One North status on Tuesday night by winning 2-1 at rock bottom Bridlington Town.

The result kept Radcliffe’s relegation fate in their own hands. They are four points clear of the drop zone with just one match left to play, although the two sides below them both have a game in hand.

Whoever finishes bottom will go down as Newcastle Blue Star have withdrawn their voluntary relegation back to the northern league.

Tuesday’s vital win lifted everyone’s spirits at the club following a nightmare double-whammy of earlier results.

Radcliffe lost their eagerly awaited Presidents Cup final with title chasing FC United 2-0 on Thursday night and were beaten 4-1 at home to 14th-placed Chorley in the league three days later with Lee Connell scoring a last minute consolation goal.

The goal scorers against Bridlington were Neil Chapple and Steve Howson, who netted the winner with just three minutes remaining.

Radcliffe’s final league game will be at fifth-placed Ossett Albion on Saturday, April 26, kick-off 3pm.

They then play Conference North side Hyde United in the Manchester Senior Cup final at Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park ground on Monday, April 28, kick-off 7.45pm.
