Chris keeps Heys' title hopes alive

13/ 3/2008

FOOTBALL: CHRIS Smithies slotted home an 87th minute winner to keep Prestwich Heys’ title hopes alive.

He collected a Sam Smith pass and placed the ball under the advancing keeper.

And the resulting 1-0 away victory over lowly Hindsford moved defending champions Prestwich up to fifth spot in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League Premier Division table.

Martin Love and Smith both went close to giving Prestwich a first half lead.

But Hindsford had more goal scoring opportunities during the course of the game and were somewhat unfortunate to lose.

Prestwich’s reserve side extended their lead at the top of the second division table to seven points with a 3-0 success against struggling Avro reserves.

Stand Athletic dropped to 10th place in the first division after losing 4-2 at sixth-placed Wythenshawe Town.

Third-placed Stand Athletic reserves were beaten 6-1 by the team directly below them in the third division table – Rochdale Sacred Heart reserves.
