Heys boss finally gets first victory

FOOTBALL: PETER Freakes finally enjoyed his first win as Prestwich Heys manager on Saturday.

His troops weathered a late onslaught from 15th-placed AFC Blackley to move up to eight spot in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League Premier Division with a 3-2 away win.

Striker Chris Smithies netted either side of a Jonathan Lyons long-ranger for Prestwich.

Smithies back-heeled in the first goal and struck the second through a mass of bodies inside the penalty area.

But Marvin Walters scored his second successive own goal. And Prestwich had to survive a late Blackley rally despite the home side being reduced to 10-men with the score at 3-2 after 60 minutes.

Prestwich are six points off the title pace and Freakes is not totally ruling out the prospect of his team retaining their championship crown for the third successive year.

He pointed out that there are still 36 points to play for and he says that he is happy with the quality of the team that he inherited a month ago.

Freakes says that there is no need to bring in lots of new players.

And he is concentrating on trying to get his troops to ‘keep the ball better and pass the ball better’.

Prestwich Heys’ reserve side also won at the weekend. They triumphed 1-0 at rock bottom Dukinfield Town A to stay four points clear at the top of the fourth division table.
