Rory sinks Ossett

FC UNITED continued their fine run of form and climbed up to second in the table with a 3-1 victory over Ossett Albion.

Those pessimists banding about phrases such as ‘crisis’ just a couple of weeks earlier have been made to eat their words as manager Karl Marginson has spectacularly turned things around.

With a raft of new signings, United look transformed. But it was ‘old boy’ Rory Patterson who outshone the more recent additions with an impressive brace on Saturday.

The game started badly for the home side though. The visitors took the lead before the new lads had even introduced themselves to their teammates.

A defensive mix up allowed Shane Kelsey to evade reds left back Shaun Roscoe and slot in the opener.

United showed their renewed vigour as they came out of the blocks straight from the restart.

The impressive Chris Baguley fed Patterson soon after but his shot was tipped around the post.

A great move involving one of the recent signings – Aaron Burns – and the in-form Jerome Wright saw Patterson go close again moments later.

Many of the 2,160 in attendance may have feared that the bad luck which has plagued FC so far this season was coming home to roost once again. But, a minute after Baguley had hit the roof of the net with a smart free kick, Patterson brought the scores level with a nice finish.

The second half had a similar pattern as FC pushed for the winner.

Inevitably, it was Patterson who got the clincher. He was set away by Baguley before rounding the keeper and expertly finishing from an acute angle.

A cameo appearance from newbie Peter Thompson, who is surely the largest human being to ever take to a football field, saw him wrap things up with a tap in. It took him just three steps to get back to the centre circle for the restart.

FC now lie second in the UniBond First Division North behind Curzon Ashton, who started pre-season training in May.

Manager Margy was chuffed to bits with the 3-1 win. He said: "We’ve played some good stuff in the last couple of games and with the new lads settling in and increasing competition for places we are starting to look good."

FC United travel to Bridlington on Saturday, November 3, kick-off 3pm.
