NEW Shakers’ signing Andy Morrell
Three strikers is not enough
Tony Howard21/ 8/2008
DESPITE enjoying an embarrassment of riches up front, Bury boss Alan Knill says he’s on the look out for yet another striker.
With new signing Andy Morrell making an impact already, experienced pro Glynn Hurst as hard working as ever and star hitman Andy Bishop set to come back this weekend, many managers would be satisfied.
But Knill is not one to rest on his laurels as he looks for a fourth striker to give the Shakers even more strength in depth to help continue their great start to the campaign.
Morrell scored in Bishop’s absence during the 3-1 win at Chesterfield at the weekend to leave Knill with a selection headache ahead of Saturday’s game against Morecambe.
Knill said: "I wanted competition for places and that’s exactly what we’ve got with Morrell coming in.
"He’s a quality player as he showed with his 70 minutes on Saturday. He can only get better too. With Bishop coming back, I’ve got a nice problem ahead of this game with three good strikers to choose from.
"Despite the three of them being available we’re still on the look out for another striker, I want even more depth.
"I’d like to bring a younger striker in that I can work with and develop."
Bishop has recovered from a thigh strain, which kept him out of the Chesterfield game, and he resumed training today (Thursday) to put himself in contention for a recall.
It will be hard for Knill to leave Morrell out though, after the 33-year-old impressed on his debut.
Morrell said: "Coming to League Two with a big reputation I wanted to hit the ground running, so it was great to get off the mark and repay the manager’s faith.
"When Bury came in for me I did my background on the manager and a few players I know, who played under him, spoke very highly of him."
The Shakers have won seven and drawn one of their last eight at home. A run Knill hopes to continue.
He added: "We’ve instilled belief in the players and they have returned that by turning dreadful home form early last season into a great run.
"The fans have got behind them and now we all look forward to home games. Things are a lot more positive and we hope that continues."
The match kicks off at 3pm.
