Bury 0 Burnley 2

BURY boss Alan Knill was bitterly disappointed after his valiant side went out of the Carling Cup against Burnley.

The Shakers put in a fine display against their big-spending local rivals, but two goals from Martin Paterson won it for the Clarets on a rain-swept night at Gigg Lane.

Knill said: "We should have won. It's really difficult, but I don't care who we play, I think I've got a decent team here and as we showed we're more than capable of beating a top Championship team.

"But the bottom line is, though, they're in the next round not us.

"I know there are positives to take out of it - but we lost. We're going to create chances every week but tonight we didn't take them.

"The overriding feeling is one of disappointment because I know that we've performed against a really good team that have spent unbelievable amounts of money, but the chances were there for us and really I should be saying it's us in the next round, but I'm not."

Stephen Dawson and Elliott Bennett both had good chances for Bury, but Burnley keeper Brian Jensen was equal to everything thrown at him.

Paterson struck shortly before half-time with a volley at the far post, but Bury were right in the game until the 21-year-old scored again after 90 minutes.

New striker Andy Morrell came off the bench for Knill's side, who face Chesterfield away at the weekend back in League Two.

Knill added: "We have to look to the next game now, and I'm sure if we take the same performance there we'll do OK."
