BURY picked up from where they left off last season to claim an opening-day win over Brentford.
The Shakers won five of their last six games at Gigg Lane last term and Andy Bishop’s 42nd-minute strike ensured they kicked-off the new campaign with a deserved home victory.
And there is more good news for the Shakers in the form of 33-year-old striker Andy Morrell, who has completed a free transfer move from Blackpool.
Brentford started strongest with new Bury goalkeeper Wayne Brown denying Alan Connell at his near post in the fourth minute.
Bury almost opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Ben Futcher knocked a Michael Jones cross back in and Paul Scott headed agonisingly wide.
Jones dragged a 12-yard effort wide after being released in the 38th minute, while team-mate Stephen Dawson cleared off the line from Nathan Elder.
But Bury broke the deadlock shortly after, Hurst and Jones combining to find Bishop, who cut in from the right to fire home left-footed from 16 yards.
Elder headed over for Brentford on the hour mark but Hurst should have sealed it with 20 minutes left, hitting a post from Elliott Bennett’s through-ball.
Brown had to be alert to save a 25-yard drive from Connell shortly after, while Hamer saved a similar strike from Jones and Kevin O’Connor blazed over for Brentford at the death.
