Bury 2 Notts County 1
10/ 4/2008
BURY hitman Glynn Hurst came off the bench to haunt his former club and dump Notts County in the relegation mire.
Hurst scored with just three minutes left on the clock to continue the Shakers’ excellent run under manager Alan Knill.
Stoke loan striker Adam Rooney gave Bury’s on-song side a deserved 17th minute lead, but the hosts failed to convert a string of chances – and Peterborough loan striker Danny Crow bagged an 71st minute equaliser.
But it was Hurst, who replaced goalscorer Rooney with just 20 minutes left, who made sure Bury extended their unbeaten run to four matches.
The home side started brightly and nearly scored in the third minute. Elliott Bennett whipped in a wicked right-wing cross and leading scorer Andy Bishop headed wide of the far post.
Moments later Rooney tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area, but his right-foot shot flew over the bar.
Richie Baker won the ball in midfield and set Nicky Adams through on goal, but the midfielder fired over from a wide angle.
Rooney then forced Stoke City shot-stopper Russell Hoult to produce a fine fingertip save from his rasping 25-yard right-foot drive.
But eventually the home side’s early pressure told. The visitors failed to clear a Brian Barry-Murphy corner from the right and the ball fell invitingly for Rooney to fire right-footed into the bottom left-hand corner.
Richard Butcher fired wide of the left-hand post with Notts County’s first chance in the 28th minute, but there were no more chances in the first half.
There were few chances following the resumption, but Crow beat the offside trap from a Jay Smith pass and coolly slotted underneath Bury keeper Darren Randolph.
But it was Hurst who took the plaudits for his instinctive close-range finish to secure the points.
