Mixed fortunes for local clubs

THE four local clubs – Stand, Prestwich, Unsworth and Radcliffe – suffered a mixed bag of results at the weekend.

In the Lees Brewery Lancashire League, eighth-placed Stand won at home to Roe Green by 99 runs after amassing 178 runs for the loss of nine wickets but sixth-placed Prestwich lost at table-topping Cheetham Hill after falling just four runs short of the home side’s 116-run target.

Unsworth lifted the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League’s Twenty20 Cup with a thrilling victory over Monton and Weaste.

They were indebted to South African professional Wayne Madsen in the much delayed final. He hit a winning single off the last scheduled ball of the game and was responsible for 62 of Unsworth’s 104-8.

Liam Richards had earlier taken two wickets for two runs off his four overs.

However, mid-table Unsworth endured a frustrating weekend in the league, losing at lowly Ashton by only nine runs after being skittled for 117 runs and seeing their scheduled home game with Littleborough called off due to bad weather.

Madsen claimed 5-31 against Ashton.

Also in the Central Lancashire League, an unbeaten 104 from professional Usman Tariq inspired fifth-placed Radcliffe to a nine-wicket home win against struggling Clifton, who were bowled out for 136 runs.

But Radcliffe’s match at mid-table Walsden was abandoned with the visitors on 137-6 chasing Radcliffe’s 209-9.

Tariq again top scored for Radcliffe, hitting 83 runs.
