Stand's triumph

STAND Cricket Club recorded a 43-run victory at home to Thornham, despite the rain bringing proceedings to a premature end.
Stand won the toss and batted first. At 72-6, they were in trouble. Fortunately, in-form Chris Holt played his best knock of the season to help take the score to 145-6. Holt made an innings of 60 including three fours and three sixes. Eight overs remained as Matt Curphey and Gary Penchion put on a stand of 27, with Curphey smashing an unbeaten 36 at a run-a-ball to help post a final total of 196-9.
Opening bowlers Niranjan and Sutcliffe helped themselves to early wickets as Thornham struggled. Sutcliffe claimed the prize scalp of Thornham professional Saj Mahmood (4), leaving the visitors 4-2.
Thornham were still in all sorts of trouble at 44-5 after Curphey and Catterall also picked up early scalps. However, with virtually nothing to lose and 147 required from the last 20 overs, captain Steve Grey and Saj Mohammed put together one of the partnerships of the season, to give Thornham just a glimmer of hope.
The pair added 72 runs in just 11 overs to move the score to 126-5. With nine overs remaining and 71 runs required, the heavens opened and the players were forced off the pitch. For each 3.5 minutes that the players are off an over is lost and the target reduced. At this point Thornham needed to have reached 169 to tie, but they had only made 126-5 and with the rain continuing play couldn’t resume and Stand were given the win by 43 runs.
The second XI were coasting at 140-3 with 20 overs remaining as they chased 202 for victory. But despite a century from Matt Holt, they were skittled for 183. Their Sunday game was abandoned due to a wet pitch.
