Worthy win

ALL four of the local cricket clubs recorded at least one victory at the weekend.

Unsworth won their battle at fellow Lake Garage Central Lancashire League title hopefuls Monton and Weaste by 91 runs after setting the home side a challenging target of 201 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

Wayne Madsen and Paul Entwistle hit 63 and 42 runs respectively before fine bowling by Darren Love, who took five wickets for 53 runs, and Eddie Shah, who claimed 3-40, prevented Monton and Weaste from getting anywhere near a successful run chase.

Unsworth’s scheduled home game with Ashton and scheduled Twenty20 Cup clash at home to Clifton were both abandoned due to the bad weather at the weekend.

But near neighbours Radcliffe did manage to play all three of their scheduled Central Lancashire League games.

The high-flyers prevailed at home to lowly Werneth by 91 runs on Saturday after posting 211-9. Skipper Ash Gorski was unbeaten on 101 runs while Usman Tariq scored 62 runs.

Carl Sandri then took five wickets for 42 runs as Werneth were dismissed for 120 runs.

Tariq also shone at Clifton the following day. He was responsible for 78 of Radcliffe’s 173 runs but mid-table Clifton had few problems in topping that total as they won with six wickets in hand.

Radcliffe also lost their Twenty20 Cup game at home to Monton and Weaste on Friday night. They amassed just 70-9 in response to the away side’s 119-6.

Prestwich had a mixed weekend of results. The mid-table side triumphed at struggling Irlam in the Lees Brewery Lancashire County League by nine wickets on Saturday after skittling the home side for just 84 runs.

Viraj Perera was unbeaten on 53 runs for champions Prestwich.

And he was the top scorer again on Sunday but he could not prevent Prestwich from crashing out of the Lancashire Cup with a 71-run third round defeat at home to Farnworth Social Club.

Perera scored 33 runs as Prestwich clocked up 167-9 in reply to the visitors’ 238-7.

Prestwich’s mid-table league rivals Stand cruised to a seven-wicket success at basement battlers Dukinfield. They bowled out the home team for only 109 runs with Zahid Javed claiming 7-43.

Stand then stormed passed the victory post thanks to good batting from Stuart Catterall, 32 runs, Carl Sutcliffe, 31, Javed, 21 not out, Chris Holt, 17, and Dave Taylor, 11.

Stand also picked up maximum points from the corresponding second team fixture.

They made 137-8, with Paul McGladdery hitting 43 runs, before sending Dukinfield seconds back to the pavilion for just 73 runs.

Stand’s Ansar Mahmood picked up 4-5 from his seven overs.
