Thomas vows to blast The Rocket

9/10/2008

PRESTWICH boxer Thomas McDonagh has vowed to defuse The Rocket when he gets into the ring for the first time in nearly five months this Sunday, October 12.

The 27-year-old takes on Doncaster’s Jason Rushton in a VIP show at the Leigh Indoor Sports Centre.

Rushton, aged 25, has won 18 of his 23 professional fights and is nicknamed The Rocket for his explosive style.

But McDonagh is convinced that his superior boxing skills will see him emerge victorious from the six-rounder.

McDonagh, who has not fought since being denied Sheffield fighter Andrew Facey’s English light middleweight title by a controversial draw decision in May, said: "I’m really confident of winning the fight.

"I have been boxing well in the gym. My trainer Brian Hughes has been happy with me and I’ve just got to bring it into the ring now. I am confident that I will do that.

"Jason Rushton is not a bad fighter. It will be a good test for me and I am looking forward to it.

"I did pretty well in my last fight and, although the result went down as a draw, it was a fight that everyone could see that I won. I want to keep boxing well and, if I can do that, I should be a British champion soon."

McDonagh, who has lost just one of his 35 professional fights, has been pencilled in for a British light middleweight title eliminator with London’s Gary Woolcombe in Wigan on Friday, November 7.

Anyone wishing to buy tickets for the VIP show this Sunday should call McDonagh’s dad Tom on: 07941 225732.
