End of an era for artists

THE curtain falls this month on an annual 34-year-old event showcasing the art of Prestwich.

The Prestwich Art Society have been holding their annual spring exhibition at Prestwich Library since 1970, but this year sees the end of an era with the exhibition’s residency coming to a close.

Changes at the library due to a Lottery grant have led to the exhibition hall being transformed into a computer room forcing the society into the corridor for their display.

And now the heritage museum is to extend its exhibition space, putting an end to the spring exhibitions altogether.

Peter Roughan, chairman of the society and its last surviving founding member, said: "It’s a shame we can’t continue to exhibit next year but hopefully we’ll find somewhere else to show our work."

The society was founded by the former Mayoress of Prestwich, Beatrice Pepperman in 1970 and previous exhibitions have been attended by both the Mayor and Mayoress.

Peter added: "The society would like to thank the library staff, patrons, members past and present and the Advertiser for their support over the many years."

The annual Prestwich Art Society spring exhibition is taking place at Prestwich Library in the Longfield Centre until May 10.

But while the annual spring exhibition is no more, the Prestwich Art Society are still going strong.

The society meet every Tuesday at St Gabriel’s Church, Bishops Road, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

Anyone interested in joining the society or wanting further information can contact Peter on: 0161 773 5784.
