Schools urged to up security

1/ 5/2008

SCHOOLS across Bury are being warned to check their security measures after 20 burglaries in eight weeks targeting schools, including incidents in Whitefield and Radcliffe.

Thousands of pounds worth of electrical equipment has been stolen over the past eight weeks and BurySafe are advising that alarms be fitted to all external doors and ground floor rooms, internal bars be placed on ground floor windows and anti-climb paint or razorwire be applied to walls and fences.

Crime reduction adviser Gaynor Mason said: "As well as securing entry points to school buildings, we would also advise schools to boldly mark their property as anything that is visibly marked with the school name will be much harder to sell on in the secondhand market.

"It is also worth locking all small valuable items away in cabinets or internal stock rooms, preferably in areas where there is an alarm system."

Two Whitefield men have pleaded guilty to breaking into one Bury school when they appeared before Bury magistrates last week.

One of the men asked the court for a further 16 similar offences to be taken into consideration and is due to be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on June 25.

The other asked for one further offence to be taken into consideration and was jailed for 18 weeks.

Another man who was arrested following the school break-in has been bailed pending further inquiries.
