Poster nets schoolgirl top prize

1/ 5/2008

A PRESTWICH schoolgirl used her artistic talent to send out an anti-racist message.

Alice Bennett’s poster won the first prize in the artwork category for her age group in a national competition organised by Show Racism The Red Card (SRTRC).

For her efforts the 12-year-old won the chance to tour around Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and meet patrons of the organisation and players including Theo Walcott.

Alice, a pupil at Parrenthorn High School, also won a signed England shirt, signed Man Utd shirt, signed football and bag with the SRTRC logo.

She was also given a special mention during a school assembly.

Alice said: "I was really excited and I was quite surprised.

"I didn’t realise I had won at first, I thought I had come runner-up.

"I was thinking up slogans and I decided on ‘make racism extinct’ and I thought I could put a dinosaur on the front and the word racism crossed out in the background.

"I really like art, it’s my favourite subject."

The youngster’s poster was chosen from thousands from across the country.

Although she confessed to not being much of a football fan, or knowing who Theo Walcott is, she loved every second of her trip.

Alice added: "The prizes were presented in the Royal Oak Suite but we got a tour of the ground as well.

"That was quite exciting but I don’t really follow football.

"If you liked Arsenal it would have been more exciting but it was still really good."
