Time to frock around the clock
Natalie Phillips31/10/2008
FROM lacy Victoriana to granny-style 1940s cardies, fashion has been taking a trip down memory lane.
For the past few years `going vintage' has been the trend that just won't go away. Designers such as Matthew Williamson and Jean Paul Gaultier have been working a folky charity shop look on the catwalk while, on the high street, chains such as River Island and Miss Selfridge are venturing back in time with their key autumn/winter collections.
Take a look at our guide to getting it right...
VICTORIANA
The look: Think Winona Ryder in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Vintage Victoriana is back - but vamped up with a touch of Gothic influence.
The kit: Dark colours, lashings of lace, frills and ruffles, and pearls to give it an elegant touch - not forgetting some cute lace-up or buttoned boots.
Where to get it: Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, River Island and Debenhams.
FOXY FORTIES
The look: 1940s Hollywood glamour, conjuring up silver screen idols of the wartime era for a dash of ladylike style.
The kit: Katherine Hepburn- style baggy trousers for daytime chic, long evening dresses with boleros for evening and gorgeous flower-print dresses for every time in between.
Where to get it: Dorothy Perkins, Matalan, Monsoon Fusion, Topshop's Boutique collection.
SEVENTIES CHIC
The look: 1970s-style folk - imagine the fashion legacy of Woodstock (minus the mud). Marianne Faithful in her heyday.
The kit: Maxi - be it skirts or dresses, kaftans, faux fur gilets, suede, jumpsuits.
Where to get it: Miss Selfridge, New Look, Oasis, Topshop.
