AN EVENT at the Bridgewater Hall on Monday (December 1) is set to raise money to mark World Aids Day.

The Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, will perform the glorious Requiem by Gabriel Faure. They will be joined by the massed forces of the Hallé Choir and Youth Choir with internationally renowned soloists Rebecca Bottone and Roderick Williams.

The evening will include the world premiere of the piece, a secular Requiem entitled Walking Down the Red Dust Road.

Seven new HIV-related texts by acclaimed Manchester-based poet Jackie Kay, MBE, will be set to music by seven different composers including Craig Urquhart, Errollyn Wallen, David Horne and Marc Yeats.

The evening will boost funds for international charity ActionAid’s Mission Malawi, a project working with people living with HIV and AIDS in the impoverished African nation which was originally conceived by Mancunian BBC producer Les Pratt.

Jackie Kay said: "I was delighted to be asked to contribute to this fantastic project, and hope that my poems will help to emphasise some of the issues and tragedies that still surround HIV/AIDS, especially in Africa. Those words have been given an extra poignancy and emotion by the incredible music provided by seven, very different composers."
