MUSIC: Camille, Lowry, Sunday 31 Aug

IRISH/FRENCH performer Camille seems to be spoken about more for her eccentricities than her actual music.

She’s known for her unusual wardrobe choices (flesh coloured bodysuits and discoballs) and her oddball stage manner (she’s known for drawing on her face and using her chest as a percussion instrument), and she’s generally perceived as being a female musician to file under the ‘kooky eccentric’ category.

Of course, all of this has led to endless comparisons with Björk, the ultimate benchmark when it comes to idiosyncratic female solo artists. But such comparisons are misleading as whilst Björk is happy to indulge in the serious and avant garde, 29-year-old Camille is prepared to trade highbrow for high humour.

Her recent single Money Note was a hilarious mickey-take of female divas like Mariah Carey, and is one of the most addictive, funny and musically inventive songs of this year. See Camille perform live and that playful humour is in greater evidence – often clad in garish fancy dress costume, she can leap between musical genres like folk, pop, jazz and soul, and lend her voice to cover versions of Missy Elliot songs and even nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty.

Befitting someone whose performance background was in ballet and stage musicals, Camille sings with a breathtaking virtuosity which never fails to make those hairs stand on end.

Following the release of a brilliant new album Music Hole and this current UK tour, Camille might well finally win plaudits for her splendid musicianship as much as for her oddball eccentricities.
